Shelton arrived in Charlottesville in 1971 and starred at tight end and wide receiver for the Hoos. For over 30 years he held the school record for the most receiving yards in a single game with 241 against William & Mary in 1974. At the end of that season Shelton was drafted by the Denver Broncos, but instead chose to attend UVA Medical School on an Army scholarship. He did his residency in radiology in Honolulu before completing his military service at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 1987.
Dr Shelton, his wife Marney, and their four kids then moved to Hendersonville, North Carolina, where Dr. Shelton is now retired having served many years as Chair of the Department of Radiology and Chief of Staff at Pardee Hospital.
An avid biker and fitness advocate, Shelton has committed countless hours to health and environmental causes in the area. Shelton has served on the County Rail-Trail Advisory Committee, is a county representative on the “Hellbender” Regional Trail Committee, and serves on the board of Conserving Carolina. Previously, he was a member of the Henderson County Greenway Master Plan Committee, founder of Tobacco Free for Life, an organizing member of Friends of the Falls, and served on the board of the Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy.
His community work has earned him several awards, including North Carolina Environmentalist of the Year, the Golden Spoke Award, the Tobacco Control Physician Award from the NC Medical Society, and the Paul Harris Fellow for his work with the New Zealand Olympic Swim team.
