Captains

Leadership. Communication. Service.
Some things never change.

Our Club has grown considerably in recent years in terms of scope, participation, and impact. More and more guys — across the Commonwealth, throughout the country, and around the world — are leaning into the group as we seek to serve each other and the program.

Time and distance don't always make things easy, but the evidence has shown over and over again that the friendships formed during your years on Grounds were built to last. It makes sense, then, that hearing from each other to know what's going on in Charlottesville and in each other's lives carries more weight when coming from a familiar name than an impersonal mass email.

Our Captains program leverages existing relationships to serve as eyes, ears, and voices to and from the Club's leadership so that more folks are more in the know.

How it Works

  • Consider yourselves Delegates of The House of Representatives.

  • If there's important news to share, help us share it. We'll provide the content.

  • If there's something from your era that we should know about, let us know.

  • When there's a milestone or reunion (i.e. '95 ACC Championship), help us with the coordination and communication if that's your era.

  • This work is important, and many hands will make it both lighter and more effective. The workload and time commitment will be very manageable.

FAN Headshot - Tony Elliott.png
"This has been an easy way to stay plugged in, stay connected to my teammates, and do my part from afar. I can't get back to Charlottesville very easily, but this is the type of role I've been doing for years — keeping a finger on the pulse and keeping my guys informed of what's happening... I'm glad that we finally have a formal structure in place so that all alums and all eras are properly covered."

Criteria

The ideal candidates for this role tend to exhibit the following qualities:

  • Unquestionably viewed as good teammates and “glue guys” in the locker room, whether they’re recent grads or guys who hung up the cleats 40+ years ago.

  • A perpetually strong affinity for the Brotherhood and the program. No fair weather fans.

  • Natural communicators and connectors who keep in regular touch with a handful of teammates. And who wouldn’t think twice about reaching out to someone they hadn’t talked to in years.

  • Ideally, someone who is able to get back to Charlottesville somewhat regularly, but lack of a presence doesn’t at all disqualify one from participating in this role.

  • Sufficient time and space to take on the commitment. Our group relies on the goodwill of volunteers, so all forms of help are always welcome. But we do need folks who will put forth an honest effort in the role so we can collect some data points to learn and grow from.
