A fixture around Grounds, Laushway dedicated 24 years to University as the Associate Dean of Students, where he was widely known for his kindness, empathy, and wisdom. Throughout his career, Laushway made significant contributions to student life, mentoring countless individuals and advising a number of diverse student groups. His highly personalized approach and unique ability to effortlessly foster connections pushed many student-athletes to branch outside of their sport for community and impact.

Having developed a deep understanding of the distinct challenges faced by the University's student-athletes, Laushway was perpetually on-call to offer support and mentorship — far beyond the playing fields — to those in need. A friend and confidant to not just students, he received invitations to serve as a guest coach on numerous staffs throughout the years. And among the many honors too numerous to list, he received the Algernon Sydney Sullivan award in 2014 for excellence of character and service to humanity.

Laushway retired in 2020, concluding a respected tenure that was steadfast in elevating the UVA experience for students and student-athletes alike. Aaron Laushway passed away in April 2023 at the age of 71, leaving a legacy of service and kindness that continues to inspire across Grounds.
